Atomic and Molecular Physics Using Positron Traps and Trap-based Beams
نویسنده
چکیده
Techniques to accumulate and cool positrons in Penning traps provide new tools to study atomic and molecular physics and chemistry. This chapter presents an overview of studies of the interaction of low-energy positrons with atoms and molecules using these methods. In the vacuum environment of a trap, isolated twobody interactions of positrons with atoms and molecules can be studied with precision. Measurements include annihilation rates, Zeff, as a function of both atomic and molecular species and positron temperature. Doppler-broadening studies provide information about the electronic states involved in the annihilation process. Positron accumulation techniques have also enabled the creation of cold, bright low-energy positron beams. High-resolution scattering measurements are described, including absolute measurements of the cross sections for vibrational excitation of molecules. Prospects for future developments in these areas are also discussed.

Trap-based positron beams
Large numbers of positrons can be accumulated and cooled in a Penning-type trap. These positron clouds can be manipulated and conditioned using plasma physics techniques, before being released from the trap to form high quality positron beams. These techniques offer a qualitatively new method for positron beam formation and manipulation that has significant advantages in efficiency, flexibility...
متن کاملToroidal Optical Dipole Traps for Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates using Laguerre-Gaussian Beams
We theoretically investigate the use of red-detuned Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser beams of varying azimuthal mode index for producing toroidal optical dipole traps in two-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Higherorder LG beams provide deeper potential wells and tighter confinement for a fixed toroid radius and laser power. Numerical simulations of the loading of the toroidal trap from...
متن کاملCreating long-lived neutral-atom traps in a cryogenic environment.
We describe techniques for creating long-lived magneto-optical and magnetostatic traps for neutral atoms. These traps exist in a sealed cryogenic environment with a temperature near 4 K, where the background gas pressure can be extremely low. To date we have observed cesium magneto-optical traps with background-limited lifetimes in excess of 1 h, and magnetostatic traps with lifetimes of nearly...

متن کاملNon-neutral ion plasmas and crystals, laser cooling, and atomic clocks*
Experimental work which uses Penning and Paul traps to confine non-neutral ion plasmas is discussed. Penning traps use a static uniform magnetic field and a static electric field to confine ions. The Paul trap uses the ponderomotive force from inhomogeneous radio-frequency fields to confine ions to a region of minimum field strength. In many atomic physics experiments, these traps are designed ...
